U15 Junior Grand Prix #3 Review (14th and 15th March)

This weekend saw the third and final installment of the U15 Junior Grand Prix Series, where teams not competing in the Super Six were in action.

The boys' matches took place on Saturday 14th March, which saw Gold Cup and National Pool competitions contested. 

The Gold Cup was hosted by Coventry and Warwick Riga, where a big upset was caused during the first match of the tournament, as top-ranked, Team Sideout, lost to eighth ranked Weymouth 2-1 (17-25, 25-20, 16-14) as the South Coast club hit back from a set down.

Third ranked Wapping Wildcats beat sixth ranked London Lynx in a close three-set battle (25-21, 16-25, 15-10). 

Richmond B, who were ranked fourth, defeated fifth-ranked Newcastle Staffs 25-17, 25-16 in a convinicing victory. 

Lastly, second ranked South Hants performed well to overcome seventh ranked Nottingham Rockets in straight sets (25-20, 25-19). 

In the second round of matches, winners Richmond B saw off Weymouth 2-0 (25-218, 25-18) to secure a spot in the final. 

South Hants pulled through to edge out Wapping Wildcats 2-1 (29-27, 22-25, 15-10) top provide their final opponents. 

The Gold match was between Richmond B and South Hants, with the South West London team dominating the match to clinch it 25-20, 25-16. 

The Bronze match was all to play for in a three set showdown, where Wapping Wildcats evemntually grabbed got the better of Weymouth after being one set down (22-25, 25-19, 15-11).

The final standings were: Richmond B (first), South Hants (second), Wapping Wildcats (third), Weymouth (fourth), London Lynx (fifth), Team Sideout (sixth), Newcastle Staffs (seventh), Nottingham Rockets (eighth). 

Pool A in the National Cup was hosted by South Bucks and made up of four teams. 

Winchester Eagles bossed the pool, finishing top after winning all three of their matches, only dropping one set when facing Richmond C (22-25, 25-19, 15-7). 

Runners-up were AST Academy, who lost to the table toppers, but beat Richmond C 2-1 (25-20, 22-25, 15-10) and South Bucks 2-0. 

Richmond C placed third having beat South Bucks 2-1, but losing to the top two teams, claiming 12 Grand Prix Series points in the process. 

South Bucks were fourth s they suffered a narrow defeat to Richmond C after winning the first set, but struggled to keep the momentum (23-25, 25-14, 15-9).


The girls' matches took place on Sunday 15th March, with 24 teams competing across the Gold, Silver, and Bronze Cups. 

The Gold Cup was hosted by Coventry and Warwick Riga, which saw Leeds Gorse Orange beat eighth-ranked AST Academy, 25-21, 25-18.

South Bucks A, who were third ranked, beat sixth-ranked Newcastle Staffs C in straight sets. 

Ashfield Vipers, ranked fourth overcame fifth-ranked Wapping Wildcats in a three-set thriller (21-25, 25-12, 15-10). 

Second ranked South Hants were always in control against seventh-ranked VBDC, winning 2-0 (25-12, 25-12). 

In the second round of matches, Leeds Gorse Orange suffered a setback, to Ashfield Vipers 2-0 as they Nottinghmashire side clincheed a final place (25-22, 25-22). 

South Bucks A were also on top form, beating previous runners up, South Hants, in an unpredictable match, winning 2-1 (19-25, 25-17, 15-7). 

The Gold match saw South Bucks A carry their momentum into the final taking control to beat Ashfield Vipers in straight sets to claim gold (25-17, 25-21). 

The Bronze match saw Leeds Gorse Orange beaten for a second time as South Hants claimed a 25-18, 25-14 success. 

The Silver Cup was divided into South and North, with four teams in each. 

The South competition was hosted by Weymouth, who capitalised on their home court advantage, winning all three of their matches to claim 16 Grand Prix Series points. 

Richmond B finished second after losing to the hosts 2-1 (25-20, 18-25, 15-9), but overcoming both Richmond C and Team Sideout 2-0. 

Third place went to Richmond C, who beat fourth place Team Sideout 2-0 (25-23, 25-21) in a hard-fought encounter. 

The North section was hosted by Newcastle Staffs, where final standings came down to 'set difference'. 

ENVC

ENVC beat Newcastle Staffs B and Nottingham Rockets 2-0, but lost to Hull Thunder 2-0 (26-24, 25-22). 

Nottingham Rockets also won two matches, against Hull Thunder and Newcastle Staffs B, losing to ENVC 25-20, 25-22. 

It was ENVC who came oput on top, though, having a +2 set difference compared to their rivals' +1.

Hull Thunder and Newcastle Staffs B both won one match, with the Humberside club having the edge to claim third with a slightly better set difference. 

Across the North and South sections, the overall winners were Weymouth, followed by Richmond B and ENVC.

The Bronze Cup was contested using the same format, divided into a South and North division. 

The Bronze Cup South was hosted by Sevenoaks School, who played well with their home court advantage, securing a 100% record without dropping a set to  to claim top spot. 

Royal Wootton Bassett came second after losing 2-0 to the hosts, but seeing off both South Bucks B and Winchester Eagles 2-0 (25-20, 25-20). 

South Bucks B won the battle for third and fourth, triumphing against Winchester Eagles in straight sets (25-20, 25-20). 

Sheffield hosted the Bronze North Cup, who like Sevenoaks, capitalised with three wins from three. 

Stockport

Stockport came second having lost to the hosts, but coming back to defeat MK City B 2-0 and Birmingham Five Ways, the latter in a three-set thriller (25-23, 20-25, 15-13). 

Birmingham Five Ways took third after a narrow loss to Stockport, but defeating MK City B 2-0 (25-20, 25-20). 

Overall, Sevenoaks School finished first, folllowed by Royal Wootton Bassett in second and Stockport in third.
