U18 Junior Grand Prix #5 Review (7th and 8th March)

The fifth installment of the U18 Junior Grand Prix took place, at the weekend with 54 teams competing in the boys' division and 54 in the girls' division. 

The boys' matches took place on Saturday 7th March, with Gold, Silver and Bronze Cup competitons, as well as National 2 and 3 matches which were divided into eight pools. 

South Hants hosted the Gold Cup, made up of eight teams, playing in a best of three sets format. 

In the first round matches, top-ranked Newcastle Staffs A were suprisingingly beaten by eighth-ranked Black Country, 2-1 (25-18, 22-25, 15-13). 

Future Stars, third ranked, beat sixth-ranked Richmond Hawks in straight sets 25-19, 25-15. 

Fourth ranked, London Lynx, meanwhile, were defeated by fifth-ranked Stockport Blue in three (24-26, 25-23, 15-9). 

Another upset for a top-ranked team saw AST Academy A (second) lose to seventh-ranked South Hants 25-21, 30-28. 

It meant that after the first round matches, the top two teams in tersm of raniking were out of the running to win the Gold Cup. 

Second round matches helped determine which teams would progress to the Gold Medal Match, with Stockport Blue beating Black Country 2-1, 15-10 in the final set.

Future Stars beat South Hants in another close three-set battle (25-18, 15-25, 8-15). 

The Gold Medal Match pitched Stockport Blue and Future Stars in opposition, with a close first set goping the way of the Londoners 25-23.

It gave them the confidence and determination to secore the second set by a bigger margin, 25-13, and, with it, the winners' trophy.

The Bronze Medal match was contested by Black Country and South Hants, with the latter clinching victory in the final set (25-18, 15-25, 15-12).

The final standings were: Future Stars (first), Stockport Blue (second), South Hants (third), Black Country (fourth), AST Academy A (fifth), London Lynx (sixth), Richmond Hawks (seventh), Newcastle Staffs A (eighth).

The Silver Cup was hosted by Milton Keynes, where top-ranked South Bucks got off to a shaky start as they faced eighth-ranked Willesden Knights in their first round match, eventually pulling through 2-1 after losing the first set (15-25, 25-18, 15-9). 

Third-ranked Leeds Gorse Purple had an early setback as they lost to sixth ranked,Ashfield Vipers 2-1 (27-25, 21-25, 5-15), while Bristol, ranked fourth, were on top form, beating fifth ranked Richmond Jackals in straight sets 25-15, 28-26. 

The last first round match saw another upset, with second-ranked team MK City A losing to seventh ranked Sheffield in three (25-14, 23-25, 12-15). 

Second round matches saw South Bucks beat Bristol 2-1 to guarantee them a spot in the gold match as Ashfield Vipers got the better of Sheffield 2-0 (25-21, 25-19).

The Gold Medal Match was a close but straight-set match, with South Bucks living up to their number one ranking to see off Ashfield 25-19, 25-20. 

The Bronze Medal Match was a closer contest, with Sheffield edging third place by defeating Bristol 2-1 (17-25, 25-19, 15-10). 

The final standings were: South Bucks (first), Ashfield Vipers (second), Sheffield (third), Bristol (fourth), Willesden Knights (fifth), Leeds Gorse Purple (sixth), MK City A (seventh), Richmond Jackals (eighth). 

The Bronze Cup was hosted by Bromsgrove School and it saw Frodsham, ranked first, beat the hosts and eighth-ranked Bromsgrove School, in straight sets 25-19, 25-19 first up.

Third ranked, Hermitage, beat sixth ranked, London Giants, 2-0 (25-22, 25-20) and Wessex, ranked fifth, beat fourth-ranked Sevenoaks School in another straight sets success (25-15, 25-14). 

In the last first round match, second ranked Nottingham Rockets crusied to a 2-0 victory against seventh-ranked Weymouth, winning 25-11, 25-12. 

The matches which decided who would vie for gold saw Frodsham beat Wessex in a thriller to secure their place (27-29, 25-21, 15-9). 

Hermitage also pulled throughafter going the distance against Nottingham Rockets in a match that was always on a knife edge (25-27, 25-20, 19-17).

Frosham and Hermitage faced each other in the Gold Medal Match, with the Cheshire team claiming top spot in straight sets 25-16, 25-19.

Wessex took bronze as they clinched the win 2-1 against Nottingham Rockets in a close encounter (29-27, 23-25, 15-12). 

The final standings were: Frodsham (first), Hermitage (second), Wessex (third), Nottingham Rockets (fourth), London Giants (fifth), Sevenoaks School (sixth), Bromsgrove School (seventh), Weymouth (eighth). 

The National 2 matches included Pools G to J, with Pools K to N in the National 3 . 

Pool G and H were combined into two groups, with each team after the first matches playing the team in the othergroup with the saem ranking.

Group 1 was won by Tamworth Spartans followed by Lincoln Cannons and Birmingham Five Ways

Wales Academy topped Group 2 after beating Rugby Phoenix, who were second and Coventry and Warwick Riga, in third, 2-0. 

Play-offs then took place to determine final standings, with 3rd place of pool 1 and 2 against each other along with 1st place of pool 1 playing 2nd place of pool 2, followed by the losers of game 1 and 2, and the winners of game 2 and 3 facing each other afterwards. 

Coventry & Warwick Riga beat Birmingham Five Ways in the 3rd place play off (25-21, 25-23).

Wapping Wildcats hosted Pool I, which saw Thames Valley finish top, only dropping one set in their three matches. 

The hosts were second after losing to the winning team in striaght sets, but beating the others by the sam margin, claiming four pool points. 

Third place went to Dartford who lost to the TV (25-14, 11-25, 14-16) but went on to beat fourth place AST Academy B. 

Pool J was hosted by Worthing Panthers, who played well with a home court advantage, winning all their matches, and only dropping one set to Portsmouth Phoenix (25-23, 24-26, 15-8). 

South Hants B came second after beating Phoenix 2-1 (25-21, 21-25, 16-14), and Farnborough 2-0. 

Farnborough placed third after overcoming Portsmouth Phoenix, 2-1 (21-19, 18-21, 22-20). 

Pool K was hosted by Team SideOut, with London Lynx B coming first, prevailing in all their three matches, with two of them going to three sets. 

Harlow Bravos came second after a narrow defeat to London Lynx B (21-25, 25-17, 15-11) but beat Opington Ravens 2-1 and Team SideOut 2-0. 

Hosts Team SideOut cwon the battle for third and fourth after victory against fourth place Orpington Ravens 2-0 (25-19, 25-22). 

Pool L was only made up of three teams, hosted by ENVC. 

Black Country B came out on top, defeating MK City C 2-0, and ENVC 2-1 (25-13, 22-25, 15-5). 

ENVC placed second after losing to Black Country, but triumphing against MK City C 2-0 to secure their second place.

Urmston Grammar hosted Pool M, who dominated their pool by winning all their matches without dropping a set. 

Following behind in second was Manchester Academy wlo lost in straight sets to the hosts but beat Preston Panthers 2-1 and Stockport Orange 2-0. 

Stockport Orange came third after there win against Preston Panthers, beating them 2-0 (25-17, 25-23). 

Spelthorne hosted Pool L and finished third of three ,despite fighting hard.

It was Winchester Eagles who came out on top after taking a final set decider 15-13 against second-placed Urbond, and beating the hosts 2-0. 


The girls' action took place on Sunday 8th March, using the same format as the boys. 

The Gold Cup was hosted by South Hants, made up of eight teams playing best of three sets. 

Top ranked Newcastle Staffs A faced clubmates Newcastle Staffs B, ranked, eighth, which proved to be far from an easy first match, eventually winning 2-1 (25-19, 22-25, 15-9). 

Third ranked, Richmond C, beat sixth ranked, South Hants, in a dominant straight sets sucess while Black Country (ranked fifth) were too strong for Wessex A (ranked fourth).

A big upset within the pool saw second-ranked Taunton beaten by seventh ranked Willesden Divets 2-1 (25-23, 24-26, 15-9). 

Newcastle Staffs beat Black Country 2-0 to guarantee their spot in the final, with Richmond C dominating their match against Willesden Divets, winning 25-7, 25-20. 

The Gold Medal Match saw Richmond C beat Staffs in failry comfortable fashion (25-15, 25-20), while Black Country overcame Willesden Divets 2-0 (25-13, 29-27) in the Bronze Medal Match.

The final standings were: Richmond C (first), Newcastle Staffs A (second), Black Country (third), Willesden Divets (fourth), Wessex A (fifth), Tauton (sixth), South Hants (seventh), Newcastle Staffs B (eighth). 

Ashcombe hosted the Silver Cup, which saw all the higher ranked teams pushed hard in their opening games. 

Ashfield Vipers, top-ranked, faced eighth ranked, Sevenoaks School, narrowly beating them 2-1 after losing the first set (16-25, 25-18, 15-9). 

Third ranked, Ashcombe Dorking faced sixth ranked MK City A coming through 2-1 (25-12, 18-25, 15-9).

Fourth ranked Wapping Wildcats also experienced a three-set match against fifth ranked Bristol, winning a close deciding set (25-12, 23-25, 15-12).

A big upset saw second ranked, Richmond B, losing to seventh ranked, London Lynx 2-1 (25-20, 19-25, 9-15).

The semi-finals saw Ashfield Vipers and Wapping Wildcats face each other, with the London club winning in straighty sets, just as Ashcombe Dorking did in their encounter with London Lynx. 

The Gold Medal Match was one to remember for Wapping Wildcats who claiming a win 2-0 over Ashcombe after a dominating first set (25-15, 26-24).

The Bronze Medal Match saw Ashfield Vipers beat London Lynx in another convinving 2-0 win (25-15, 25-23). 

The final standings were: Wapping Wildcats (first), Ashcombe Dorking (second), Ashfield Vipers (third), London Lynx (fourth), MK City A (fifth), Bristol (sixth), Sevenoaks School (seventh), Richmond B (eighth). 

Coventry and Warwick Riga hosted the Bronze Cup, with yet another big upset for one of the top teams.

This time it was Nottingham Rockets who experienced a surprise defeat, losing 2-0 eighth-ranked hosts, Coventry and Warwick Riga 25-17, 25-18. 

AST Academy also suffered an unexpected setback, with the third-ranked team losing 2-1 to sixth ranked Worthing Lions in a close final set battle (16-14). 

Fourth ranked Frodsham defeated by fifth-ranked, Stockport where the teams were closely matched (25-22, 25-22). 

Lastly, second ranked, London Giants,performed and secured a convincing 2-0 victory against seventh-ranked Leeds Gorse Purple

The Giants went on to beat Worthing Lions 2-0 in the semi finals, while Coventry and Warwick Riga who dug deep to beat Stockport after losing the first set (21-25, 25-21, 15-11). 

The Gold Medal Match was a close battle, with the hosts pulling through, beating the London team 2-1 (25-20, 9-25, 15-12). 

Worthing Lions placed third after beating Stockport 2-1 in the Bronze Medal Match (21-25, 25-9, 15-8). 

The final standings were: Coventry and Warwick Riga (first), London Giants (second), Worthing Lions (third), Stockport (fourth), AST Academy (fifth), Frodsham (sixth), Leeds Gorse Purple (seventh), Nottingham Rockets (eighth). 

ENVC hosted Pool G, which was made up of three teams where MK City B came top of the pool, beating the hosts 2-1, and Nuneaton 2-0. 

ENVC came second after a close loss to teh Bucks side, but then beating Nuneaton, 25-15, 25-18. 

Urmston Grammar hosted Pool H, with the home-court advantage proving effective, as the team won all three matches without dropping a set, taking home six pool points. 

Lincoln Cannons followed behind in second, losing the hosts, but beat the other two teams 2-0. 

Sheffield came third, edging out fourth place Manchester Academy 2-0 (25-16, 25-18). 

Pool I was hosted by Thames Valley, which had produced some hard-fought matches, where final standings were based on 'sets for'. 

Team SideOut came first having beat South Bucks B and Thames Valley, but losing to Malory Eagles 2-1 (25-21, 17-25, 9-15), leaving them with five sets won. 

London club Malory Eagles also lost one match, against Thames Valley 2-0, resulting in a second place finish with four sets won. 

Thames Valley came third, having beat Malory Eagles 2-0 and losing 2-1 to South Bucks B and 2-0 to Team SideOut, resulting in three sets won. 

South Bucks B ultimately came fourth, as, while they beat Thames Valley 2-1, they lost their other two games 2-0, coming away with two sets won. 

Pool J was hosted by Team Medway, with Darford dominating the pool, winning all their matches, only dropping one set to the hosts in a three setter. 

The hosts, Team Medway, came second after a close defeat but beating Hills Road Sixth Form and Wapping Wildcats B 2-1. 

Hills Road Sixth Form were third after a narrow 2-1 setback to the hosts (25-20, 25-27, 15-9), but went on to beat Wapping Wildcats B in a tight three-set encounter (25-27, 25-20, 15-6). 

Wapping Wildcats B were fourth after two 2-1 losses where they just came out on the wrong end of things each time . 

Wessex hosted Pool K, who capitalised on their home-court advantage, only dropping one set in their matches. 

Weymouth Ripples placed second after only losing the hosts 2-1 (25-16, 19-25, 15-0). 

South Hants B came third after losing to the hosts and Weymouth Ripples 2-1, but beating fourth place Winchester Eagles 2-1 (25-19, 16-25, 15-7). 

Pool L was staged by Richmond, where Richmond E stormed through their matches, winning them all in straight sets. 

Spelthorne placed second, beating Richmond D 2-1, and MK City C 2-0. 

Third place went to Richmond D, who lost to the top two teams, but beat MK City C, who came fourth, 2-0 (25-15, 25-16).

Pool N was hosted by Bromsgrove School, which saw Leicester Athena top the final standings by winning all three matches in straight sets. 

Hosts Bromsgrove School came second after beating Telford and Northampton 2-0. 

Telford finished ahead of Northampton in the table after a close battle (25-20, 25-17, 15-5).
