Gordon eyes team approach after England Head Coach appointment
The Malory Eagles stalwart – a Hall of Fame inductee – took on the role on an interim basis last May, succeeding Maria Bertelli.
Now she has agreed to take on the position for the long-term future as England prepare for this summer’s Home Nations Tournament in Limerick, Republic of Ireland at the end of July and beginning of August.
Fellow Malory coach Ian Legrand has been appointed as her assistant, joining Rúben Duarte, who remains as Team Manager, while work is underway to secure a physio and sports scientist, which will be announced shortly.
Having worked with the likes of Steve McKeown, Bertrand Olie, Alex Chinery, Ryan Murphy, Darren Lewis, Elaine Brown and Richard Guest in the early months of her interim tenure, Gordon is a strong believer that having a strong network of coaches and experts is important in helping to take the team forward.
“When I first took on the interim role and immediately had to prepare the U22 squad to compete I leaned heavily on the coaching contacts I had to help me out and that was much needed and very welcome,” she said.
“Now Ian and I are looking to take things forward, it remains very much a team approach because even though we are working closely with the squad and making the decisions, we value very much different opinions.
“We have the tools and experience, but that doesn’t mean to say we won’t value input from others, quite the opposite in fact, and we know the value of having a good team around us.
“During the transition period when I first came in, Rúben was very important in showing the players how things work and he will remain integral going forward.
“Now we are also looking to add physio and sports scientist and analysis expertise, helping everyone stay fit and on court and really making a difference with our strength and conditioning.
“Other young coaches who have offered their help too, and It’s good to know that we have knowledge and support around us.”
The squad has trained either side of Christmas and further sessions are planned ahead of the trip to Ireland.
Opportunities to train and scrimmage with European age groups is being explored, as is a combined trip with the England Senior men.
Gordon added: “We are looking at a longer term approach, and we have the target of getting the side ready for the Home Nations.
“The squad currently consists of some experienced players, who help set the standards expected, and we also have some young prospects from the U22 squad, as well as playing pro in Europe or studying in the US.
“We do, however, continue to look and review in order to strengthen the squad.”
