Over 55 team to fly the flag at World Veteran Volleyball Championships in Spain

The event will be played from 6th to 11th October in Benidorm, Spain where they will take on renowned volleyball nations such as Czechia, Germany and Poland. 

The team put together from across Britain and Ireland will play in the indoor competition, though there is also a beach tournament. 

Contesting the Over 55 section (age ranges vary from Over 35 to Over 65 ) a first training session took place this weekend (Saturday 22nd August) at All Saints School, Sheffield. 

That involved a friendly, but fiercely competitive, game against a team from Sheffield Springers, who play in NVL Division 2. 

Team Organiser Steve Kay, 62, who has put the team together for the tournament, said: "The weekend was the first time I have played in a team entirely of my generation in over 30 years. 

"I don't know why I was anxious beforehand about us gelling as a team, but it went well! We hope to have another training session before we head out to Spain to take on some mighty volleyballing nations." 

"Next time we hope to be wearing our lovely kit, in the colours of Great Britain, that our sponsors Haggards Crowther Accountants have generously provided." 

Scottish Player-coach Bill Stobie, 66, added: "We had a great session over the weekend. It was good to meet everyone and get to know each other on court. 

"Considering this was the first time we have played together it was a great performance against an established team of young, talented players, and we took a deserved couple of sets off them. Wisdom and experience count."
