BEM for Beckford in King's Birthday Honours List

Highly-respected volleyball administrator Gary Beckford has been given a British Empire Medal (BEM) in the King’s Birthday Honours List.

He was successfully nominated by a group of her peers, who felt he deserved recognition for his long-standing input to the London volleyball scene.

Beckford is perhaps best-known for organising the All Nations Tournaments (Senior and Junior) for more than 20 years, and it has become a firm fixture in the summer schedule

But he has also contributed greatly to the London club scene, having served as Chair of the London Volleyball Association, where the league it runs is widely regarded as the strongest regional senior competition in England.

“Volleyball England’s Board and Hub Team would like to offer its warmest congratulations to Gary on being awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) in the King's Birthday Honours List,” said Volleyball England Chief Executive Charlie Ford.

“It is a truly fitting acknowledgement of the dedication, passion, and commitment he has shown over so many years.

“Those of us who have had the privilege of working alongside Gary within volleyball know just how much time, energy and heart he has invested in supporting communities, bringing people together, and creating opportunities through sport.

“The positive impact he has made extends far beyond the volleyball court, touching countless lives and helping to strengthen communities across East London and beyond.

“We are immensely proud to see his contributions recognised at a national level and would like to thank him for everything he has done for volleyball.”

The BEM is a prestigious honour awarded for meritorious civil or military service, specifically recognising individuals who have made a significant, hands-on contribution to their local community through long-term charitable work, volunteering, or other impactful service.

Recipients are entitled to use the letters “BEM” after their name, with BEM sittig just below the rank of Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the UK Honours System.

BEM recipients are usually presented with their medal locally by the Lord-Lieutenant, the Monarch’s personal representative in the county, rather than attending an investiture ceremony at Buckingham Palace.

They are also invited to attend a Royal Garden Party.
