International referees’ spotlight - Nick Heckford

How did you get into refereeing? When did you become an international referee?
I became a referee after taking up recreational volleyball in Poole. I was a latecomer to the sport at 32, but after reading the rule book, I realised I could contribute to the club despite my limited playing ability.
In 2001, I completed a Grade 4 Referee course and began officiating in the NVL later that year.
By 2005, I had achieved Grade 1 (National) status, and in August 2007, I attended my International Referee Candidate Course in Olsztyn, Poland
What is your favourite thing about refereeing?
My international career has enabled me to be part of the highest level of professional sport and refereeing in world class indoor arenas like Maracanazinho in Rio and the Ergo Arena in Gdansk has been an amazing experience.
Equally rewarding is the opportunity to meet and work alongside referees from around the world
What advice would you give to someone starting out as a referee?
Refereeing is about facilitating the game and ensuring that the outcome is decided by playing actions and not that of the referee.
Aim to improve with every match and overcome those matches that don’t go as planned.
Approach every game as a learning opportunity, adding each experience to your toolkit. When you face a familiar challenge, draw on that knowledge to adapt and make the right decision.
What has been your biggest achievement as a referee/official?
One of my biggest achievements as a referee has been officiating at prestigious FIVB events, including the Women's World Championship in Italy in 2014 and the World League/VNL from 2015 to 2022.
Additionally, I am proud to have refereed various National Finals for Volleyball England.
