U15 Junior Grand Prix round-up (20th and 21st January)

A number of familiar names flexed their muscles as 82 teams took part in the first U15 Junior Grand Prix of 2024.

Tier 1 teams were playing in their first Grand Prix, while Tier 2 sides were playing in their fourth of the series, with three 4v4 events having taken place before Christmas to allow players to gain experience.

In the Tier 1 girls competition, South Hants won Pool A with straight sets wins over second placed Wessex, who won their other two matches, followed by VBDC and hosts Ashcombe.

A second pool hosted at Ashcombe, Pool B, saw Richmond A emerge triumphant as they topped a three-team grouping with successive wins, conceding just 26 points in doing so.

Wapping Wildcats overcame Deep Dish Crystal Palace in straight sets to decide second and third.

In Pool C, played at Leeds Gorse, the hosts led the way by winning their three games without dropping a set.

Ashfield Vipers finished as runners-up with wins over Urmston Grammar B and Hull Thunder, who were third and fourth respectively.

South Bucks came to the fore in three-team Pool D at London Giants, beating both Richmond B and Richmond C in the process, with the Bs beating the Cs to finish second.

Further north on the Wirral, Urmston Grammar A won the key match against Newcastle Staffs to edge them out of top spot in Pool E.

Wirral beat Manchester Marvels in straight sets to ensure they claimed third spot.

The Boswells School, who hosted, were confident winners in Pool F, beating off the challenge of Sevenoaks, who were second, and Dulwich, in third.

In the boys’ competition, hosts Wessex topped three-team Pool A with clear victories against Cardiff Celts and South Hants

The Welsh side clinched second with a hard-fought three-set success, winning 15-9 in the tie break.

Pool B was won by The Boswells School, but they had to work hard to win their two matches against game opponents in Dartford and Team Sideout

After beating the Kent club 26-24, 25-22, they then came thought a three set-match against Sideout, who were beaten by Dartford in the race for second spot.

Leeds Gorse Orange were the pick of the Pool C teams, edging out Urmston Grammar in the decisive final match with a 2-0 victory.

A keenly-contested win for table toppers South Bucks against second placed Deep Dish Crystal Palace decided Pool D, with Richmond B in third.

Urmston Grammar A finished top of the pile on Pool E, but did not have it all their own way against Newcastle Staffs, who finished second, coming from a set down to win the tie break.

Preston Panthers beat Leeds Gorse Purple to decide the battle for third and fourth.

Richmond A celebrated hard after securing top spot in Pool F by beating hosts London Lynx, while Dulwich finished in third.

Tier 2 teams were contested their fourth Grand Prix, with four pools in both the girls’ competition and three in the boys’ competition.

City of Salford, London Lynx, Richmond D and Cambridge A were the respective winners of the girls’ pools, with Stockport, Cambridge A and Ark Putney winning the boys’ pools.
