International referees’ spotlight - Sebastian Widlarz

International referees’ spotlight - Sebastian Widlarz

The fourth in a series of articles on Volleyball England referees, who have also taken charge on the international stage.

How did you get into refereeing? When did you become an international referee?

I became a referee in 2002 passing a course organised by the Polish federation in Katowice.

After moving to the UK, I was eager to continue my career. My dream and motivation had always been to become an international referee, and this opportunity arose after the London 2012 Olympic Games, when I was selected to represent England as a candidate international referee.

In 2013, I attended the International Referee Candidate Course (IRCC) in Serbia where a strong exam result and solid practical performance earned me my qualification.

Since then, I have officiated numerous international matches both in the European Cups and European Championship.

What is your favourite thing about refereeing?

Meeting new people, experiencing different cultures, tasting delicious foods, travelling the world and of course, being in the middle of the sport that I love.

What advice would you give to someone starting out as a referee?

Always strive to learn from the best and educate yourself whenever possible. Whatever your life's passion or dream job may be, commit to it fully and pursue it with dedication.

What has been your biggest achievement as a referee/official?

Reaching the position I am today is one of my proudest achievements.

Some key moments in my journey include line-judging the men’s final at the London 2012 Olympic Games, officiating crucial Cup matches in the later stages of competitions, and refereeing the 2022 semifinal of the CEV U18 European Championship in Georgia.

These are just a few highlights, and I’m confident that there is so much more to come in my refereeing journey. The future is bright, and I look forward to the opportunities that lie ahead.
