NVL and National Shield Preview (2nd and 3rd December)

NVL and National Shield Preview (2nd and 3rd December)

Games in the National Volleyball League this weekend may be few and far between due to National Shield fixtures (see below), but those that are being contested could have real significance to a number of teams involved in the hunt for promotion.

Men’s Division 3 South East, for instance, sees three clubs who hope to be in the mix to go up at the end of the season – Rhinos Cambridge, Onyx London (pictured below) and Kent Invicta (pictured above) – meet each other in a triangular fixture at North Cambridge Academy on Sunday.

Onyx are currently second in the table behind leaders Northampton, but could jump above them if they win both matches.

The same carrot is in front of Invicta, who must claim two convincing victories and hope the third match goes the way of the Rhinos to secure top spot.

But that will be no easy feat for either of those teams, given the Rhinos have so far won all three of their league matches and will go in with confidence ahead of this double header.

The one match in Division 2 Central pairs improving Hounslow with the Dartford Crossers, the former knowing an emphatic win could move them up to second.

In Division 2 North, just one place separates Harrogate and Loughborough Students, who have both experienced mixed seasons so far.

A capital derby between London Giants, in fifth, and London Aces, in fourth is the only activity in Division 1.

In the women’s competitions, Division 2 South sees two fixtures, both involving teams with title aspirations.

Current leaders Team South Wales (pictured below) visit Sussex Dolphins, while unbeaten London Giants will hope to leapfrog above Cardiff Falcons when they meet at the Caius House Youth Centre.

Two matches will also be played in Division 2 Central, with Herts out to stretch their lead at the top of the table as they host Loughborough Students

Rhinos Cambridge welcome Norwich Spikers with both sides so far having only played a handful of matches between them.

In the second round of the men’s National Shield, five Division 1 teams will have their eye on going all the way, but they know they will have to avoid potential upsets first.

London Aces are the highest ranked team in terms of league position left in the competition but have what is a potentially tricky tie against Exeter Storm, who have won all five of their Division 2 South matches this season.

Division 3 North side York Vikings have won six of eight league matches so far and will look forward to having a go at Division 1’s bottom club Manchester Marvels, while SQUAD host another first tier NVL side in Cambridge ARU

Division 2 North and South leaders, Darkstar Derbyshire and Bristol, respectively host Marske Phoenix and visit Wombourne

In the second round of the women’s National Shield, three Division 1 teams remain, with the highest ranked of them, third-placed Richmond, travelling to Division 3 South East side Spelthorne Sharks

Leicester Athena make the short trip to Division 2 Central team Northampton, while MK City will hope to put their struggling league form to one side as they visit Division 3 South East leaders Cambridge

Sheffield, who have lost only once in Division 2 North face a team from their own division in the shape of Manchester Marvels Mystics, while unbeaten Division 3 Central side Darkstar Derbyshire 2 journey across the county border to face Nottingham Rockets
