Club Profile - Sitting Bucks Volleyball Club

In this first instalment, we hear from Steve Smith, the Founder and Manager of Sitting Bucks, who answers our questions about the club, its greatest achievements and its ambitions for the future.

How did your sitting volleyball club start?

We set up Sitting Bucks in Buckinghamshire in 2018 because we recognised a real need in the area. There were no local teams nearby, but there was a clear enthusiasm and appetite for one.

What is your most memorable achievement as a club?

It would be easy to say winning the national title three years in a row, which is our standout achievement, but, for me, the most memorable milestone was competing in Europe and entering the men’s Euroleague.

This was a massive step up for the club, exposing us to a new level of competition and gave us a taste of what we need to be aiming to reach as a team.

What is your ambition for the club?

Our goals for the future to strengthen our club’s foundations are to excel on the European stage and to establish a second development team.

Why should people try sitting volleyball?

It is a fast and furious sport that is lots of fun. What truly sets it apart is the incredible  sense of inclusivity within the community, where disabled and non-disabled players, as well as coaches and officials, have created a supportive environment for everyone.

What advice would you have for someone wanting to start sitting volleyball?

Just go and give it a try. All the clubs are extremely welcoming and after a few sessions you will be ready to compete in Grand Prix events, if that's something you are interested in.
