Friday Preview: It's a knockout!

It's a time when league standings mean nothing. Reputations are on the line and the Davids will believe they can beat the Goliaths. It's a weekend of Roune 1 action in the Men's National Cup, when all teams will be dreaming of reaching finals day. Losing teams will get a second shot at glory as they will enter the shield competition, meaning even after this weekend, their hopes of appearing at the National Volleyball Centre in Kettering on finals day, will still be intact.

Saturday's action:

There are 17 matches being played on Saturday and a chance for many of the teams from outside the National Volleyball League (NVL) to shine. Wombourne VC and Brentwood Volleyball Club, will be hoping home advantage will boost their chances of a giant killing as they take on Coventry & Warwick Riga (Men's Div 2 North) and Newmarket VC (Men's Div 3 Central). There's also a short trip for Weymoth Beach Volleyball Club to play Southampton Volleyball Club Mens 1, who being from the Men's Division 1 will be heavy favourites.

Sussex United will perhaps fancy their chances of beating the odds as they travel to South Hants from the Men's Division 3 South. South Hants got a taste of league action last weekend, playing their opening two fixtures on one day, winning one and losing one. The UK Armed Forces are represented and have what looks a tricky tie away to London Aces of the Men's Div 1, but will hope to get their best side together and spring a surprise.

The stand out tie from the round though sees two non-NVL go-head-to-head.

Pick of the round: Lionhearts vs. Wapping Wildcats

There is guaranteed to be a non-NVL team in the second round of the cup as two London sides battle it out. Being a division higher, Wapping will go into the game as favourites, but both sides will want to make their mark and get through to the second round. It's an early start at the Britannia Leisure Centre, with the game beginning at 9.40.

Sunday's action

There are two more ties in the National Cup on Sunday as Hull Thunder take on Sheffield University Men 2, and Polska Przychondnia Intervolley Manchester head up against York VC.

Meanwhile, the Women's National Cup roound one action will take place in October.
