Rain rarely stops play

Rain rarely stops play

Almost 120 teams braved decidedly inclement conditions at the weekend for the 43rd edition of the annual Whitefield Volleyball Tournament.

Ultimately, the worst of the weather conditions were confined to Friday night (pity the teams who had to pitch their tents in heavy, driving rain), Sunday morning and late afternoon. A full programme of matches was still completed, even if Saturday’s matches were reduced from three sets to two as insurance against a dire weather forecast which never quite came to pass.

In the final reckoning, it was Solstar, Yeovil and Czech-mate who emerged as the victors of the Division 1 men’s, women’s and mixed team competitions respectively.

And it was left to the organisers to contend with arguably the worst conditions of the weekend as monsoon-like downpours - which began just as the final few teams left - saw the volunteers confined to their marquee for an hour as the courts at the South Bristol Sports Centre were quickly flooded.
