England Teams Announced Ahead of NEVZA U19 Championships

The NEVZA U19 Championships makes its UK debut this weekend 28-30 October, as the National Volleyball Centre in Kettering hosts twelve teams, competing to be champions.

After finishing in third place (boys) and sixth place (girls) respectively last year, the teams are hoping for further success this year.

Rachel Laybourne, head coach for the girls said: “This is the first time we’ve held the NEVZA U19 in England and that’s really exciting for the team.

“We’re on a holding camp in venue this week, so we’ve had time to acclimatise which is advantageous as the home side.

“We’re focusing on tournament, our first game up against Sweden will be a tough match but it’s a good chance for us to work out our nerves. Our target match is the second game against Iceland.

“It’s a young team, with lots of development to come but we’re feeling positive. We have a stretch target of fourth place but we’ll be taking it one game at a time.”

The girls team will include a number of players from the squad who competed in the CEV European U19 Championships earlier this year. It will also feature a number of talented beach players, including Ellie Austin and Anaya Evans, who have been playing on the international junior beach circuit throughout the summer.

The England boys team will be boosted by the inclusion of Malory Eagles’ Ryan Poole who made his England senior debut earlier this year when then men returned to international duty in May. The side also includes Joe Palombo of Essex who recently made it onto the NEVZA U17 Dream Team and brothers Javier and Joaquin Bello, who made history when they won the NEVZA U17 Beach tournament in July.

Kevin O’Malley, team manager for the boys’ team, said: “We’ve had a very intense training camp this week which has gone really well.

“We’ve got new players in the squad who have moved up from the cadets but they have gelled well and we’re now all ready to go and meet the competition.

“We’ll be fine tuning over the next couple of days and hoping to perform well.”

This year’s NEVZA U19 Championships involve teams from Norway, Sweden, Iceland, Faroe Islands, Denmark and England with Finland having withdrawn from the age group this year.

Tickets are available on the door and the full match schedule can be found here.

All matches will be streamed live and details will be released on our website, Facebook and Twitter pages on Friday morning.
